Video shows the first view of a new Bonobo baby, 1 week old. The bonobo is a rare, very endangered species. Very few videos exist of a new infant and maybe none of just-born infant and mother. The mother is very protective -- holding the baby close at all times. She constantly grooms it. The infant can hold on as the mother moves around. The mother is Unga, the new one is Gina, and Unga's son is Gander. In the same enclosure are Lucy, son Ricky, and daughter Jo-T. In the other enclosure are the matriarch, Susie, her son Donnie, and daughter Lola. On 9/11 Unga was on an airplane over the Atlantic Ocean traveling from Europe. During the crashes the plane was diverted to Gander, Canada. Because of this, Unga's first born was named Gander. Also shows bonobos greeting people they know. They nod their head and give much the same greetings as people do. Donnie knocked on glass to say Hi. Bonobos constantly use tools, either for tasks or fun. Here they are pushing their bedding around. They will push anything and often play ball. The bedding is a "stadium seat" that they carry around and then sit on, or cover themselves with. The bonobo may be the most closely related of all species to the human. We share about 98 % of our genetic make-up. We are more closely related to them and chimpanzees than chimpanzees are to gorillas. Behaviorally the bonobo may be more like people than the chimp. However they are among the most recently discovered of species, thus, few people know about ...
